Venta Icenorum Roman Town.....

A visit to the 'Market of the Iceni' located at Caistor St Edmund in Norfolk.  The Roman writer Ptolemy described Venta as the one significant town in the former territory of the Iceni tribe.  The settlement at Venta was began some time after the Iceni revolt of AD 60/61, but the formal streets were not laid out until 60 years after the revolt.  Traces of human occupation here date back to the Mesolithic period (10,000 to 4,000 BC).

Are those the marks left behind by a Roman chariot, or am I away with the fairies again ……

The field on the other side of the River Tas was a suburb of the Roman town...

Lovely walks over Dunston Field which has been sown with a mix of wild grasses and native wild flowers … achoo!

The history under our feet, to think that here was once a Roman town...
