Brancaster and Branodunum Roman Fort....
Brancaster, Norfolk.....
A young lady and her horse kindly posed for a photo...
Walking towards the Roman Fort, views across the marshes, which would have been the sea when the Romans where here....
I couldn't agree more...
So, this is where the beach was in Roman times, where naval vessels would have landed, according to the National Trust information board. Branodunum is one of 11 forts along the south and east coasts of England which were built in the 3rd century AD.
Standing on the Roman beach, am glad Pixie and I didn't need our cozzies .... and this is the field in which Time Team found an Iron Age settlement, the people who lived there must have seen the Romans arriving!
Brancaster Staithe in the distance...
Where the Roman fort was built, and where 'Time Team' excavated in 2013 - to walk where Tony Robinson once trod!
Standing where the fort once stood, looking across the defensive ditch to the edge of the Roman village......
After the fort was abandoned the walls were quarried and used to build Brancaster church and other local buildings.
A Norman and a Celt ....
I don't remember seeing such large rosehips before ....
An ancient wall, maybe some of the stones were from the Roman fort...
Brancaster St Mary..... the tower was built in the 1400's....
.. wondering which of these stones in the chancel were part of the Roman fort....
The south porch is from the 1300's....
Pixie loves her church visits and it is her philosophy as follows:- Every time I see a church I pay a little visit, so when it's my time to be taken inside, the Lord won't say "who is it?" ..!
From the road out of Brancaster towards Docking....
Tired out, bless her, after walking for 2 hours on those little legs....
And this is Time Team's reconstruction of Branodunum ...
