Surlingham, Norfolk....

The ruins of St Saviour's church overlook the marshes of the Yare Valley.  The church was a late 11th century foundation.  Originally there were two parishes in Surlingham and St Saviour's was linked to Surlingham manor.  By the 13th century it was under control of the Abbess of Carrow Abbey.  The population of the parish declined and in 1705 St Saviour's was subsumed into the parish of St Mary's.  It gradually decayed, a process accelerated by the robbing of stonework for other building projects … the tea leaves!  Unfortunately there is a fence of barbed wire around the ruins so it was a little tricky to photograph, however, I did my best amongst the stinging nettles … ouch!.....

It is the resting place of naturalist Ted Ellis, writer, curator and founder of Wheatfen Naure Reserve.

The steps from the track up to the ruins.....

The views from the ruins are splendid .....

And into Surlingham Church Marsh RSPB Nature Reserve....

St Mary's church at Surlingham has a Norman tower, but with a 14th century octagonal top....
