Venta Icenorum Roman Town.....
A visit to the 'Market of the Iceni' located at Caistor St Edmund in Norfolk. The Roman writer Ptolemy described Venta as the one significant town in the former territory of the Iceni tribe. The settlement at Venta was began some time after the Iceni revolt of AD 60/61, but the formal streets were not laid out until 60 years after the revolt. Traces of human occupation here date back to the Mesolithic period (10,000 to 4,000 BC).
Ruins of the town's defensive walls....
Looking towards the town.... with the parish church of Caistor St Edmund built within the Roman town walls.....
Are those the marks left behind by a Roman chariot, or am I away with the fairies again ……
.. and this is what the town would have looked like 1800 years ago...
The field on the other side of the River Tas was a suburb of the Roman town...
Lovely walks over Dunston Field which has been sown with a mix of wild grasses and native wild flowers … achoo!
Turning back time ….
The aforementioned Caistor St Edmund....
The font dates from the 1400's....
The history under our feet, to think that here was once a Roman town...
A beautifully cared for and well maintained site with a generous amount of information boards … well done the Norfolk Archeological Trust and the South Norfolk District Council.

At my age you think you have lived a long life, but in relation to British history it has just been a blink of an eye! Imagine, when you had a fully developed civilisation, America still where in war with their neighbours instead of having peaceful trading. And the story goes on..
Thanks Cindy!
