Wendens Ambo, Debden (again), High Roding and a quick stop-off in Stansted.....

... a lovely day enjoying a whistle-stop tour of beautiful Essex, starting off with Wendens Ambo where my Gapes family lived from the early 1700's until the early 1800's....

Wendens Ambo church ... many of the features go back to the 11th century

Roman tiles above a Norman door....

An unusual feature is the external east wall of the nave which stands above the chance, unlike the rest of the church it is not of flint but of upright wooden beams which are clearly visible from the outside......

The font (14th century) where my rellies' bonces were anointed.....

16th century inscription....

14th century wall painting....

... pulpit dating from around 1500....

Debden ... more ancestors from here, our 2nd visit ....

Beautiful High Roding ... where my Crabb, Galley, Knight, Miller, Moreton, Lake and Reeve families came from......
The church dates from the 13th century....

.... and in Stansted Mountfitchett .... where my Lucy Judd was baptised in 1836 and her parents were married as were their ancestors before them (Gray, Gurson, Giffin, Stannard families).  More rellies than I can shake a stick at!

I was about to tell Pixie she had to wait there, but being the eagle-eyed doggy that she is, she pointed out the last few words that I hadn't seen!
