St James' Chapel, Lindsey .....
The chapel set in a pretty setting dates from the 13th century. It probably had two purposes - to serve the adjacent Lindsey Castle and as a chantry where the priest would pray for the soul of the founder. In the mid 13th century a member of a wealthy local family, Nesta de Cockfield, is known to have instigated a tithe tax to pay for the upkeep of the chapel. The castle was abandoned by 1400 and only earthworks are visible today. All chantries were closed down in 1547 and the building became a barn until 1930 after which it was restored. The chapel is built of flint with a thatched roof.
At Stackyard Green....
On the way to Milden.....
What happened to the 'hall' I wonder!......

And I think our house is old (1790).. but then you were clever to build of stone instead of wood. Very interesting to read about the history dear Cindy. And a generous amount of gorgeous photos as always!
Thank you!
